Profile

Dr. Michael Melkonian is an educator with an extensive experience in both the secondary and tertiary levels of education and positions held at schools and universities within Europe and the MENA region where he has developed and taught a wide range of psychology and counseling courses.

At ECAE, Dr. Melkonian is currently the Associate Professor in the Division of Counseling, Special Education and Neuroscience and has been engaged in the development and teaching of counseling, psychology and related courses.

In addition to his teaching background, he has been extensively involved in the field of international and cross-cultural education and has engaged in the development of workshops, inter-institutional collaboration and international projects as part of the European Commission’s Lifelong Learning Program.

Michael’s ongoing research involvements are both collaborative and interdisciplinary and are fueled by his interests that include the development of social identity, the dynamics of cross-cultural relationships within educational environments and the influence of dispositional and situational factors upon academic achievement.

Dr. Melkonian holds a BSc in Experimental Psychology from the University of Sussex and a Ph.D. from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. His doctoral thesis entitled “The effect of an international school environment on the perception of self and others” investigated cross-cultural dynamics within an educational environment. Dr. Michael is a member of the British Psychological Society and the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology.
